Robert Boyle
(1627 - 1691)

Robert Boyle is thought by many to be one of the fathers of modern chemistry. He was one of the first scientists to perform controlled experiments and kept detailed records of his procedures, materials and observations. Robert Boyle was born in Ireland to a very wealthy family. He spent his youth in excellent schools, studied under the guidance of a tutor and traveled extensively. He is credited with the invention of the vacuum pump and he showed that sound would not travel where there was no air. Boyle conducted numerous experiments on gases and formulated "Boyles Law" related to the volume and pressure of gases. Boyle was the first to use the term "chemical analysis" in which scientists attempt to discover the chemical make-up of various substances.
