Anders Celsius was a Swedish astronomer who developed the centigrade thermometer. This device has a scale of 100 degrees separating the freezing and boiling points of water. From 1730 to 1744 he was a professor of astronomy at Uppsala University where he built an observatory. He made extensive observations of the Aurora Borealis and collected more than 300 observations.
In 1737, Celsius participated in a French expedition to the polar regions that was sent to measure one degree of meridian.
