John Dalton
(1766 - 1844)

John Dalton was born in Manchester, England and spent his early adult years as a tutor. He became very interested in what makes up substances in the world and what happens to substances when they undergo change. He is probably best known for his law of Conservation of Mass that states "The mass of any substances that react in a chemical reaction is equal to the total mass of whatever new substances result." John Dalton also set out the idea that the world is made up of large numbers of identical very small particles called molecules, and that the variety in molecules results from atoms that are arranged in different groups.
