Thomas Edison
(1847 - 1931)
Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. When Edison started school, his teachers thought he was a rather dull student because he had hearing problems and he missed quite an amount of school. Edison however, became an avid reader and also set up his own lab in his basement at the age of 10. Edison began working for the railroad and in the course of his duties, he saved the life of a railway official's son. Out of gratitude, the boy's father taught Edison to use the telegraph.

By 1869, Edison moved to New York City, started a lab and married. He was not very good at managing money and had several financial difficulties. He kept on inventing and eventually produced a model of a record player, the incandescent light bulb, and supervised the installation of the first power system in New York City. Edison also invented the first talking moving pictures in 1915.
