William Gilbert
(1544 - 1603)
William Gilbert was a physician and scientist, born in Colchester, England, who performed several experiments on the nature of magnetism and electricity. He was among the first to notice that when certain substances are rubbed, a force is observed. Gilbert was the first to use the words "electric, electric attraction, and magnetic pole." There is a unit of magnetomotive force, the gilbert, named after him.

He was also the first English scientist who read about Copernicus' astronomy theories and believed that they were correct.
