Edwin Hubble
Edwin Hubble was an astronomer noted for establishing that there are other galaxies in the universe beyond the Milky Way and for demonstrating that the universe is in a constant state of expansion.

Hubble spent most of his professional career at the Mt. Wilson Observatory in California. While observing galaxies, he noted that they were moving away from one another at a particular rate. The further away they were, the faster they were receding.

Edwin Hubble calculated the birth of the universe to be about 2 billion years ago which confirmed the Big Bang theory. Today scientists estimate that the universe is about 20 billion years old. The Hubble Telescope is named in honor of this famous scientist.
