Guglielmo Marconi
(1874 - 1937)

Marconi was born in Italy in 1874 to a wealthy family. He attended private schools and then the Livorno Technical Institute. Marconi was very interested in using radio waves to send sounds well beyond the range of sight. He did much of his experimenting at his family home near Bologna. Eventually he did succeed in sending signals almost two miles. He tried to interest members of the Italian government in his discoveries but they were not interested. The British navy became involved in his work and tested some of his equipment on their ships. In 1899 Marconi sent a signal across the English Channel to France. In 1901, he managed to send a signal completely across the Atlantic Ocean.
For his efforts, Marconi received the Nobel prize in physics in 1909.
