Dr. Jonas Salk was born in New York City in 1914. He is best known for the development of a vaccine against polio, a disease that crippled many youngsters. In 1953, almost 2 million children received the vaccine in the United States proving that it was both safe and quite effective.

Dr. Salk received the U.S. Congressional gold medal for his outstanding work in the medical field.
