Alan B. Shepard, Jr. On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space. His spacecraft, Freedom 7, was launched from Cape Canaveral to an altitude of 130 miles and a range of 300 miles. The sub orbital flight lasted 15 minutes.
