Antony van Leeuwenhoek
(1632-1723)
Antony van Leeuwenhoek did not have much education nor was he rich but with skill. Patience and an endless curiosity he succeeded in making some of the most important discoveries in the history of biology. He discovered bacteria, protests, sperm cells, blood cells and much more. Leeuwenhoek learned to grind lenses and made simple microscopes. Compared to today's microscopes, his microscopes were very simple one lens designs fitted into a brass plate, but they opened up a whole new world of exploration.

Leeuwenhoek could not draw very well but he took in describing whatever he placed under the lens in great detail. Eventually he hired an illustrator to create the drawings of the things he observed.
