Pulleys and Gears Vocabulary List

 

Block and Tackle: A pulley system that uses more than one pulley.

Crane: A machine used to hoist heavy objects.

Effort: The use of physical energy to do something.

Elevator: A platform or small room that can be raised or lowered in a vertical shaft to carry people or goods from one level to another.

Friction: The resistance to motion created when an object is rubbed against another.

Fulcrum: The point on which a lever turns.

Gear: A wheel with teeth that fit into the teeth of another wheel.

Invention: An original device, system or process.

Lever: A simple machine for lifting a weight. It usually consists of a strong, rigid bar that rests on a fixed point on which it turns.

Load: Something that is carried, lifted or supported.

Machine: A combination of mechanical parts that operate together to perform a task.

Newton: The force needed to accelerate a mass of 1 kilogram by 1 meter per second every second.

Pulley: A freely turning wheel that has a groove around its edge through which a rope, chain or belt moves.

Windmill: A machine that uses the power of the wind hitting a set of vanes to turn a wheel.
