Count Alessandro Volta

Count Volta was born into a wealthy family in Como, Italy in 1745. Volta was a physicist and completed pioneering work in the study of electricity. He stacked disks of different metal in contact with one another trying to create electricity. Eventually, using copper, zinc and cardboard soaked in salt water, he built his first battery. The word volt is named after Count Volta. It is the International System unit for the amount of energy given to a charged particle. Count Volta also experimented in the areas of meteorology, pneumatics and electrostatics.
